Symphurus insularis is a species in the large clade of Percomorpha and thus belongs to the superclass of the bony fish. I could not find any common names yet.
Description
The body of Symphurus insularis is sand-coloured with light and dark patterns. Its shape is oval and slightly elongated. Except for the mouth, the entire body is surrounded by a partially transparent fin.
It reaches a size of up to 8cm.
Habitat and spread
It is found on sandy as well as on rocky ground, down to a depth of 30m. While diving in the Canaries I have only been able to observe them during my night dives. They have been quiet rare.
Furthermore the distribution are of Symphurus insularis is quite small. They are only to be found around the Azores, Madeira, the Canary Islands and Senegal.
Biology
About the way of life only little is known. Symphurus insularis is a benthic species and seems to be more active in the night. At least I could not see it during the day. Close related species feed on small fish, crustaceans and Polychaeta.
