The sea breams are a family of perch-like relatives and thus belong to the series of bony fishes. Although half of all known species live in South African waters, we can observe over 20 species of sea breams while diving in the Canary Islands. Among the Sparidae, there are omnivores, but also strict herbivores or carnivores. Additionally, they are often hermaphrodites or change sex during the course of their lives.
