The Canary Damsel, also known as Blue Fin Damselfish, is a species in the large clade of Percomorpha and thus belongs to the superclass of the bony fish.
Description
The Canary Damsel has a black base colour with blue bordered fins and a blue glowing, horizontal stripe above the side line. On his head are also several small blue glowing stripes. The eyes are relatively large and black.
Similiparma lurida will have a maximum size of 10cm.
Habitat and Distribution
The Canary Damsel lives near the ground, above rocky reefs with sandy surfaces, down to a depth of 25m.
When diving in the Canaries, it can be observed at every dive.
Furthermore it is found in the eastern Atlantic around the Azores, Madeira, Savage Islands, Cape Verde and the coast of Senegal.
Biology
Similiparma lurida is extremely territorial and faces every intruder. Whether blenny, triggerfish or divers, everyone is driven away.
Their diet consists of algae, small invertebrates and zooplankton.
After egg laying, the males protect the nest until the larvae have hatched.
