Thor

Thor, scientifically known as Thor amboinensis, is a species of marine gastropod mollusc belonging to the family Muricidae. Common names for this species include the “Thor’s Helmet” and “Thor’s Miter.” Thor’s Helmet is renowned for its striking appearance and intricate, spiky shell structure, which gives it a menacing and formidable aesthetic reminiscent of the Norse god Thor.

Characteristics

Thor's Helmet typically reaches a length of 6 to 12 centimeters. Its shell is thick, heavy, and has a conical shape with a pointed apex. The surface of the shell is covered in numerous, prominent, sharp spines. The color of the shell can vary from shades of brown to cream, often with intricate patterns and banding. The aperture of the shell is relatively small and oval-shaped. The body of the snail is typically white or cream-colored and has a prominent siphon, which is used for respiration and feeding.

Environment

Thor's Helmet is a marine gastropod found in tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean. This species is primarily found in shallow, rocky reefs, tidal pools, and seagrass beds. Thor's Helmet is a carnivorous predator, feeding on other molluscs, crustaceans, and worms. It uses its sharp spines as a defense mechanism against predators.
