Tethyspira

Tethyspira is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks in the family Turridae. This genus is classified as a member of the subfamily Turrinae. The genus was first described in 1916 by the German malacologist Wilhelm Kobelt. The type species for the genus is Tethyspira smithi Kobelt, 1916.

Common Names

While Tethyspira species lack widespread common names, some may be referred to as "turrids" or "turrid snails" due to their classification within the Turridae family.

Characteristics

Tethyspira snails possess the following characteristics:

  • Shell shape: Typically elongated and slender, with a pointed apex and a slightly swollen body whorl.
  • Shell surface: Often adorned with spiral cords, axial ribs, or a combination of both, creating a distinctive textured appearance.
  • Aperture: Elongated and narrow, with a well-developed siphonal canal.
  • Operculum: Absent or very small.

Environments

Species of Tethyspira are generally found in marine environments, often at depths of 100-200 meters. They are primarily associated with soft sediment bottoms, but can also inhabit rocky substrates in some instances.
