Sclerodactylidae
Sclerodactylidae is a family of small, benthic, predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. There are two genera and about 10 species in this family, all of which are found in the Indo-Pacific region.
Common Names
Sclerodactylidae are commonly referred to as sclerodactylids, though no other common names are widely used.
Characteristics
Members of Sclerodactylidae are characterized by:
- Small size, typically less than 2 cm in length
- A thick, solid, usually white shell with a short spire
- A smooth, glossy surface
- A narrow aperture with a thickened outer lip
- A well-developed operculum
Environment
Sclerodactylids are found in shallow, tropical waters, often in association with coral reefs. They are typically found buried in sand or under rocks.
