Pennariidae

Pennariidae is a family of small, free-living marine worms in the order Phyllodocida. The family is comprised of about 35 known species, with a wide distribution in the world’s oceans. Pennariidae are commonly known as “feather worms” or “feather-duster worms” due to their distinctive feathery tentacles, which are used for filter feeding.

Characteristics

Pennariidae are characterized by their elongated, segmented bodies, typically ranging from a few millimeters to a few centimeters in length. They possess a well-developed head with a pair of prominent palps and a pair of sensory antennae. A defining feature of this family is their unique arrangement of tentacular crowns, often featuring numerous feathery tentacles arranged in a spiral pattern.

Environments

Pennariidae are primarily found in marine environments, inhabiting a variety of habitats, including:

  • Intertidal zones
  • Subtidal zones
  • Coral reefs
  • Deep-sea sediments
They are often associated with soft sediments, rocks, and algae.
