Odontodactylidae

Odontodactylidae is a family of marine gastropods in the order Neogastropoda. They are commonly known as tooth-fingered snails, reflecting their unique anatomical feature of having a row of tooth-like projections on their “finger” (a structure used for feeding). Odontodactylids are generally small to medium-sized snails, typically found in shallow coastal waters, often living among rocks and algae. They are carnivorous predators, feeding on other invertebrates, particularly polychaete worms. The family comprises three genera: Odontodactylus, Pseudosimnia, and Simnia.

Characteristics

Members of the Odontodactylidae family are characterized by a number of features that distinguish them from other gastropods. Their shells are usually small and fusiform (spindle-shaped), often with a smooth surface. The aperture of the shell is narrow and elongated, and the columella (the central axis of the shell) is typically smooth. Perhaps the most defining feature is the "finger" located on the right side of the head, which is used to capture and subdue prey. This "finger" is actually a modified radula, a toothed structure found in the mouths of all gastropods, but in Odontodactylids it is greatly enlarged and modified to resemble a finger. The finger is covered in a row of sharp, tooth-like projections, which are used to grasp and crush prey.

Environments

Odontodactylids are found in a variety of marine environments, but they are most commonly found in shallow coastal waters, often among rocks and algae. They are also known to inhabit coral reefs and seagrass beds. These snails are generally restricted to the Indo-Pacific region, with some species extending into the western Atlantic Ocean.

Genera

The Odontodactylidae family includes the following three genera:

  • Odontodactylus
  • Pseudosimnia
  • Simnia
