Diplobatis

Diplobatis is a genus of skates, cartilaginous fish belonging to the family Rajidae. These skates are found in the eastern Pacific Ocean, off the coast of North and South America. They are distinguished by their unique body shape, coloration, and dentition. The genus currently comprises two recognized species: Diplobatis ommata and Diplobatis colombiensis.

Common Names

These skates are commonly known as "eyed skates" due to the prominent dark markings on their dorsal surface, which resemble eyes.

Characteristics

Diplobatis species are characterized by:

  • A broad, diamond-shaped pectoral fin disc
  • A relatively short, blunt snout
  • Two large, prominent "eyes" on the dorsal surface
  • A small, terminal mouth
  • Rows of small, pointed teeth
  • A long, whip-like tail
  • The absence of a dorsal fin

Environment

Diplobatis skates inhabit the continental shelf and slope, typically found at depths ranging from 100 to 1000 meters. They are demersal fish, spending most of their time resting on the seafloor. Their diet consists primarily of benthic invertebrates, including crustaceans and mollusks.
