Astrostole

Astrostole is a genus of starfish in the family Asteriidae. The genus contains four known species, all found in the coastal waters of the Pacific Ocean.

Common Names

Astrostole species are commonly known as "spiny starfish" or "starfish with spines."

Characteristics

Astrostole starfish are characterized by their relatively small size, typically with a diameter of less than 10 centimeters. They have a five-pointed, star-shaped body with a distinctive spiny surface. The spines are sharp and can be quite numerous, giving these starfish a somewhat intimidating appearance. The color of Astrostole starfish can vary widely, ranging from reddish-brown to gray or even yellowish-green.

Environments

Astrostole species inhabit rocky intertidal zones and subtidal habitats, often found clinging to rocks or seaweeds. They are typically found in areas with strong currents and wave action.
