Berried Anemone – Alicia mirabilis

The Berried Anemone is a species in the order of the sea anemones and thus belongs to the class of Anthozoa.

Description

Alicia mirabilis has an orange to red stem with 96 long, white tentacles. The stem is occupied with raspberry-like pustules. During the day she drawn together and looks more like a snail than an anemone. It can reach a maximum size of 50cm.

Habitat and Distribution

The Berried Anemone lives on rocky ground up to 40m depth. When diving in the Canaries you can rarely observe tit. They are also found in the Azores, on the coasts of Portugal and Spain, in the Mediterranean, in the Red Sea and in the Caribbean.

Biology

Alicia mirabilis is nocturnal. During the day it is contracted. It lives solitaire and feeds on invertebrates, crustaceans, small fish and zooplankton.
The particularity compared to other Anthozoa is that they often change their location.
