American Believed to Be Eaten by Shark in Indonesia

A tragic turn of events marred what was supposed to be a dream holiday on September 26, when 68-year-old Colleen Monfore from South Dakota went missing while diving near Pulau Reong Island in Indonesia. Strong currents swept her away from her group, initiating an extensive but ultimately unsuccessful search operation. Recent findings have led authorities to believe she may have been consumed by a shark as reported by metro.co.uk.

Failed Rescue Operation

Despite strenuous efforts by the group’s guide to bring Colleen back to safety, she was carried off by strong currents. The incident prompted an exhaustive search operation, lasting eight days and ending on October 3 due to dangerous sea conditions and little hope of locating her alive.

Grim Discovery in East Timor

The search took an ominous turn when a fisherman in East Timor discovered human remains inside a shark. Authorities in the Liquisa District reported that the remains were found in a black wet suit, matching Colleen’s profile. Describing the shark as appearing unhealthy, the fisherman initially suspected it had ingested plastic or a fishing net. Upon examination, the grim discovery was made.

Authorities React and Investigate

East Timorese officials have since reached out to the Indonesian coast guard and urged anyone with missing friends or relatives to come forward. Muhammad Saleh Goro, Head of the Regional Technical Implementation Unit (UPTD) for the Management of the Alor Islands Marine Park, stated, “We have coordinated with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Dili, and the KBRI has confirmed the truth of this information.”

He added, “The body of the woman was found in a shark in Timor Leste, not in Indonesian territory. We are now investigating the case further to confirm if they are the remains of anyone reported missing in Indonesia. From the diving suit worn by the victim, it is suspected that they were a diver. The results of the investigation will be published soon after more complete information is available.”

Ipda Giovani BM Toffy, the chief of police in Southwest Maluku where Colleen went missing, added that initial search efforts involved comprehensive sweeps along the coast and surrounding waters, although they yielded no results.

Awaiting Closure

Friends and family of Colleen Monfore are now anxiously awaiting further information as authorities continue their investigation into this tragic event. What was intended to be a memorable holiday has ended in an untimely and devastating loss.
