Umbraculidae
Umbraculidae is a family of small, predatory marine gastropods. They are commonly known as Umbrella Shells or Umbrella Snails due to their distinctive, umbrella-shaped shells. These shells are often brightly colored and patterned, making them popular among collectors.
Characteristics
Umbraculids are characterized by their flattened, umbrella-shaped shells. The shell is often smooth, with a low, central spire and a wide, flaring aperture. The apex of the shell is usually slightly pointed. The foot of the snail is broad and flat, allowing it to crawl on the seafloor. The operculum, a small plate that covers the opening of the shell, is absent in umbraculids.
These snails are carnivorous and feed primarily on small invertebrates, such as polychaetes and crustaceans. They are nocturnal and typically remain hidden during the day.
Environments
Umbraculids are found in a variety of marine habitats, including coral reefs, rocky shores, and sandy bottoms. They prefer shallow waters, usually at depths of less than 100 meters.
Distribution
The family Umbraculidae is found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. They are particularly diverse in the Indo-Pacific region.
Genera
The family Umbraculidae consists of several genera, including:
- Umbraculum
- Schismope
- Tectus
- Typhis
