Turrilatirus
Turrilatirus is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Turridae.[1] This genus was previously included as a subgenus of the genus Turris, which in turn has also been treated as a subgenus of Clavatula.[2] Turrilatirus is a diverse genus with numerous species found worldwide, mainly in warmer waters.[3]
Common Names
Common names for snails in this genus include "turrids" and "turritellas."[4]
Characteristics
Snails in the genus Turrilatirus typically have a long, slender, and somewhat fusiform shell with a pointed spire.[5] Their shells are often ornamented with longitudinal ribs, axial cords, and spiral grooves. The aperture is narrow and often has a distinct siphonal canal.[6]
Environments
Turrilatirus snails are found in a variety of marine environments, including shallow coastal waters, deep sea environments, and even the open ocean.[7] They are often associated with soft substrates like sand or mud, but may also be found on rocky reefs or coral.[8]
