Sipunculidae
Sipunculidae is a family of marine worms known commonly as peanut worms or “sipunculids.” These unsegmented invertebrates are characterized by their elongated, cylindrical bodies and a retractable proboscis used for feeding. Sipunculids are found in various marine environments worldwide, ranging from shallow intertidal zones to deep-sea trenches.
Characteristics
Sipunculids are soft-bodied animals lacking any external segmentation or appendages. They have a distinctive, retractable proboscis, which can be extended to capture food and then retracted into the body. Their bodies are typically divided into two regions: the anterior "trunk" containing the mouth and the posterior "tail" or "abdomen."
The proboscis is covered with numerous sensory tentacles that aid in detecting food. These worms possess a well-developed muscular system that allows for powerful contractions and burrowing into sediments. The digestive system is complete, with a mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, intestine, and anus. Some species possess specialized structures like hooks and papillae on their bodies, particularly in the proboscis.
Environments
Sipunculids are highly adaptable animals found in diverse marine environments, including:

- Seagrass beds
- Mangrove swamps
They are often found burrowing in soft sediments, under rocks, or within crevices. Some species can also be found attached to surfaces like algae or coral.

Sipunculids are primarily deposit feeders, consuming organic matter, detritus, and sediment. They use their proboscis to sweep the surrounding environment, gathering food particles. Some species are also known to be carnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates.
Reproduction
Most sipunculids are dioecious, meaning they have separate sexes. Reproduction involves the release of eggs and sperm into the water, where fertilization occurs. Some species may exhibit brooding behavior, where the eggs are retained in the body cavity until they hatch.
