Prionovolva

Prionovolva is a genus of small, predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Ovulidae, the ovulids, or egg cowries. These snails are often brightly colored and patterned. The genus is composed of small species, with the largest reaching only 15 millimeters in length.

Common Names

Members of the genus Prionovolva are commonly known as false cowries.

Characteristics

The shells of Prionovolva species are typically ovate and smooth, with a distinct, narrow aperture. The exterior of the shell can exhibit a variety of colors and patterns, often resembling the shells of other marine snails. The aperture is generally narrow and often has a distinct tooth or ridge on the columellar lip.

These snails are carnivorous, feeding primarily on other small mollusks, such as other sea snails and bivalves. They have a radula, a ribbon-like structure with rows of teeth, which they use to scrape food from their prey.

Environment

Prionovolva species are found in a variety of marine habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms. They are typically found in shallow waters, from the intertidal zone to depths of around 50 meters.
