Sponges are a phylum of multicellular animals with over 7,500 species. Porifera is Latin and is composed of the words porus (‘pore’) and ferre (‘to bear’), which translates to ‘pore-bearing’. Sponges can range from a few millimeters to over 4 meters in height.
