Pisaniidae
Pisaniidae is a family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. This family contains just one genus, Pisania, with approximately 10 species. Members of this family are commonly called “false murexes” or “dwarf murexes.”
Characteristics
Pisaniids are distinguished by their conical to fusiform shells, which are often ornamented with axial ribs, spiral cords, and spines. Their aperture is relatively large and often has a distinct siphonal canal. The operculum is corneous and has a spiral shape.
Environment and Distribution
Pisaniidae species inhabit a variety of marine environments, including rocky shores, sandy bottoms, and coral reefs. They are found in both shallow and deep waters, with a global distribution in tropical and subtropical regions. These snails are generally carnivorous and prey on other mollusks and crustaceans.
