Notocochlis

Notocochlis is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Trochidae, the top snails. This genus has two species that are found in the Indo-Pacific region.

Common Names

The common names for these species are:

  • Notocochlis spirata (Gmelin, 1791) - Spiral top shell
  • Notocochlis granulata (Gmelin, 1791) - Granulated top shell

Characteristics

The shells of Notocochlis species are typically small, with a conical shape and a pointed apex. They are characterized by their smooth, shiny surface, often with fine spiral ridges or granules. The color of the shells can vary, ranging from white to brown to reddish-brown. The aperture is circular or slightly oval, and the lip is often thickened and slightly flared. The operculum is horny and circular.

Environments

Notocochlis species are found in a variety of marine habitats, including rocky shores, coral reefs, and seagrass meadows. They are typically found in shallow water, but some species may occur in deeper water. They are herbivores and feed on algae and other plant matter.
