Microchirus

Microchirus is a genus of flatfish in the family Soleidae, commonly known as soles. These fish are found in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Black Sea. They are characterized by their flattened bodies, which lie on the seabed, with both eyes on one side of the head.

Common Names

Common names for species within the genus Microchirus include:

  • Small-spotted Sole
  • Common Sole
  • Sand Sole
  • Fanfin Sole

Characteristics

Members of Microchirus are small to medium-sized flatfish, typically reaching lengths of 10-25 cm. They have a characteristically elongated, oval body shape. Their eyes are located on the right side of their head, which is known as the "ocular side". The left side of the body, which lies against the seabed, is known as the "blind side". The colour of the ocular side varies depending on the species and the environment, while the blind side is typically white or pale. The dorsal and anal fins are long and continuous, extending from the head to the tail.

Environments

Microchirus species are primarily found in marine environments, inhabiting sandy or muddy bottoms in coastal areas. They are often found in depths ranging from the intertidal zone to several hundred meters. They are bottom-dwelling fish and prefer to bury themselves in the sediment during the day, emerging at night to feed on benthic invertebrates and small fish.
