Maoricrypta

Maoricrypta is a genus of marine snails, classified as gastropods, that belong to the family Trochidae, commonly known as top snails. The genus was described by Finlay in 1927 and currently encompasses three species: Maoricrypta albonodosa, Maoricrypta costata, and Maoricrypta radiata.

Characteristics

Members of the genus Maoricrypta are characterized by their conical shells, typically measuring between 15 and 25 millimeters in height. The shells are usually adorned with prominent radial ribs, which give them a distinctive textured appearance. Their apertures (openings) are rounded and often have a pearly sheen. The color of the shells varies depending on the species and can range from brown to white, with spots or bands of different hues.

Environments

Maoricrypta species are primarily found in the intertidal and shallow subtidal zones of the Southwestern Pacific Ocean, particularly in New Zealand and Australia. They prefer rocky shores with exposed wave action, where they can cling to the substrate using their strong foot.
