Lucayablennius
Lucayablennius is a genus of combtooth blennies, a group of fish in the family Blenniidae. The genus was established in 1989 by Böhlke and Robins. It contains three species, all of which are native to the western Atlantic Ocean.
Common Names
The common names for Lucayablennius species include:
- Lucayablennius rissoides: Risso's Blenny
- Lucayablennius longispinis: Long-spined Blenny
- Lucayablennius exilis: Slender Blenny
Characteristics
Lucayablennius species are small, elongate fish. They have a characteristic elongated snout with a prominent, fleshy tentacle above each eye. Their body is covered in small scales, and they have a single, dorsal fin that extends nearly the entire length of their back. The anal fin is relatively short. Lucayablennius species have a maximum total length of about 10 cm.
Environment
Lucayablennius species are found in shallow coastal waters, often in rocky or coral reef environments. They are typically found in areas with strong currents. Lucayablennius species are generally benthic, meaning they live on the bottom, and they are often seen hiding under rocks or in crevices.
