Loxopagurus
Loxopagurus is a genus of hermit crabs in the family Diogenidae. It is distinguished by its asymmetrical abdomen, with the left side being significantly larger than the right. This asymmetry, known as “loxo” in Greek, is believed to be an adaptation for life in the deep sea, allowing the crabs to better maneuver and avoid predation in tight spaces.
Common Names
Members of this genus are often referred to simply as "loxopagurine hermit crabs".
Characteristics
Loxopagurus species are characterized by the following features:
- Asymmetrical abdomen with the left side larger than the right
- Long, slender chelipeds (claws)
- A generally elongated and cylindrical body shape
- Small eyes located on stalks
Environments
Loxopagurus species are typically found in deep-sea environments, often inhabiting areas with rocky substrates, coral reefs, and hydrothermal vents. Their preferred depths range from a few hundred meters to several thousand meters below the surface.
