Latissistrombus

Latissistrombus is a genus of medium-sized to large sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Strombidae, the true conchs. This genus is one of the two genera that make up the subfamily Strombinae (the other genus is Strombus).

Common Names

There are no common names for Latissistrombus, however, some species in this genus have common names. For example, Latissistrombus canarium is known as the "Canarium Conch".

Characteristics

Latissistrombus species have a distinctive, thick, heavy shell with a wide, flaring lip. They are often brightly colored, with patterns of spots, stripes, or bands. The shell is usually smooth, but some species may have ridges or spines. These sea snails are typically herbivorous and use their radula, a tongue-like structure with teeth, to scrape algae off of rocks and other surfaces.

Environments

Latissistrombus species are found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. They live in a variety of habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and rocky shores. They are generally found in shallow waters but can be found at depths up to 100 meters.
