Laevistrombus

Laevistrombus is a genus of medium to large sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Strombidae, the true conchs. The genus was established in 1996 by J. H. P. Waite. It is known for its distinctive smooth shells, unlike the more typical, knobby, or spiky shells of other Strombidae genera. Laevistrombus species are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Indo-Pacific.

Common names

Common names for species within the genus Laevistrombus include:

  • Smooth conch
  • Smooth stromb
  • Milk conch

Characteristics

The shells of Laevistrombus are typically thick and heavy. Their smooth surface, a key feature of the genus, contrasts with the more sculptured shells of other Strombus species. The shells can vary in color, ranging from white to tan, brown, or reddish.

Environments

Laevistrombus species are found in a variety of marine habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, and sandy bottoms. They are typically found in shallow waters, but some species have been observed at depths of up to 100 meters.
