Galeus
Galeus is a genus of catsharks, a group of small sharks with a cat-like appearance. They belong to the family Scyliorhinidae, commonly known as the catsharks or smooth-hound sharks. Galeus species are found in temperate and tropical waters around the world, often inhabiting shallow coastal areas and the continental shelf.
Common Names
Members of the genus Galeus are commonly referred to as "smooth-hounds," "catsharks," or "dogfish sharks." Some specific species have additional common names, such as the "blackmouth catshark" (Galeus melastomus) and the "European catshark" (Galeus europaeus).
Characteristics
Galeus sharks are characterized by their slender, fusiform bodies and relatively small size. They typically range from 40 to 100 centimeters (16 to 39 inches) in length. Their bodies are covered in small, smooth dermal denticles, giving them a velvety texture. They have two dorsal fins, both of which are relatively small and located towards the rear of the body. Their pectoral fins are large and rounded, while their pelvic fins are small and located near the anus. Galeus species also possess a pair of anal fins, which are absent in other shark families.
These sharks have distinctive, cat-like eyes with round pupils and a prominent nictitating membrane (a transparent eyelid). They have a relatively short snout and a wide, slightly curved mouth. Their teeth are small, pointed, and arranged in several rows. Galeus sharks are primarily bottom-dwellers and feed on a variety of invertebrates and small fish, using their sharp teeth to capture prey.
Environment
Galeus species are found in a variety of marine habitats, including:
- Coastal waters
- Continental shelves
- Sandy and muddy bottoms
- Coral reefs
They are often found at depths of up to 500 meters (1,640 feet) but can also be observed in shallower waters. Most species are nocturnal, spending their days resting on the seafloor and becoming more active at night to hunt for prey.
