Dissodactylus
Dissodactylus is a genus of frogs in the family Craugastoridae. They are commonly known as rain frogs or rain toads. These frogs are found in Central and South America, and are notable for their unique adaptations to living in humid, forested environments.
Description
Dissodactylus frogs are typically small to medium-sized, with most species ranging from 1 to 4 cm in length. They have robust bodies, short limbs, and pointed snouts. Their skin is smooth or slightly granular, and can be a variety of colors, including brown, gray, green, and red. Some species have distinctive markings, such as stripes or spots.
Distribution and Habitat
Dissodactylus frogs are found in a variety of habitats, including rainforests, cloud forests, and montane forests. They are particularly common in humid, forested areas with high rainfall. Their distribution ranges from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, with the greatest diversity found in the Andes Mountains.
Ecology and Behavior
Dissodactylus frogs are mostly nocturnal and are primarily insectivores. They use their sticky tongues to capture small insects and other invertebrates. They often hide under logs, rocks, and leaf litter during the day, and emerge at night to feed. Some species are known to burrow into the soil.
Reproduction
Dissodactylus frogs reproduce by laying eggs in the water. The eggs are typically laid in small clusters or scattered in shallow pools. The tadpoles hatch from the eggs and develop in the water for several weeks before metamorphosing into adult frogs.
