Columbellidae

The Columbellidae are a family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Columbelloidea. The family Columbellidae has been defined in different ways, with some authors including the families Anachisidae and Pyramidellidae.

Common Names

The common name "Columbellids" is used for this family. They are also sometimes called "dove snails" or "pyramids".

Characteristics

Columbellids have a distinctive conical shell with a pointed spire, which gives them their common name. They are often brightly colored and patterned, with a variety of shapes and sizes. The shells are typically thin and fragile, but can be quite thick in some species. These snails are usually small, with most species reaching less than 20 mm in length. However, some species can grow up to 50 mm long.

Most Columbellids are carnivores, feeding on other small marine invertebrates. Some species are herbivores, feeding on algae.

Environments

Columbellids are found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters, living in a variety of marine habitats. They are often found on sandy bottoms, rocky reefs, and under rocks.
