Bursa

Bursa is a genus of marine snails, specifically sea snails, that belong to the family Bursidae. These gastropods are commonly known as “frog shells” or “helmet shells.”

Characteristics

Members of the genus Bursa are characterized by their thick, heavy shells that are often shaped like a helmet or the head of a frog. The shell surface can be smooth or have various patterns, including ribs, spines, or knobs. The aperture (opening) of the shell is generally wide and oval-shaped, and it features a distinct siphonal canal.

Bursa snails are carnivorous predators and their diet consists primarily of other marine invertebrates, such as crustaceans and other snails.

Environments

These snails can be found in various marine habitats around the world, including:

  • Rocky shores
  • Coral reefs
  • Seagrass meadows

They typically inhabit shallow water depths but can also be found in deeper waters.
