Bovichtus
Bovichtus is a genus of fishes in the family Bovichtidae, commonly known as the bovichtin fishes or the “codfishes”. There are currently eight recognized species within this genus, distributed throughout the Southern Hemisphere, primarily in cold, temperate waters.
Common Names
Bovichtin fishes are commonly referred to as "codfishes," although they are not closely related to true cod (Gadus spp.). Other common names include "icefishes," "blenny cods," and "black cods."
Characteristics
Members of the genus Bovichtus share a number of distinct characteristics, including:
- Elongated, somewhat compressed bodies
- Small mouths with a single row of teeth
- Large, prominent eyes
- A single dorsal fin extending along most of the back
- A single anal fin
- Scales that are relatively small and cycloid (smooth, overlapping)
Environment
Bovichtus species inhabit a variety of marine environments, primarily in cold, temperate waters. They are typically found in coastal regions, often near rocky reefs and kelp forests. Some species may also inhabit deeper waters, down to depths of several hundred meters.
