Blepharipodidae
The Blepharipodidae are a family of small, crab-like decapod crustaceans in the infraorder Brachyura. Blepharipodids are commonly known as “blepharipod crabs” or “sponge crabs.” These crabs are characterized by their flattened bodies, short and broad carapaces, and often brightly colored appendages. They are typically found in shallow marine environments, particularly in association with sponges, which they use for both shelter and camouflage.
Characteristics
Blepharipodids are relatively small crabs, with most species reaching a carapace width of less than 2 centimeters. Their bodies are flattened dorsoventrally, allowing them to move easily within the intricate structures of their sponge hosts. The carapace is typically broad and short, with a distinctive frontal margin that is often spiny or toothed. The appendages are generally short and stout, with some species exhibiting brightly colored or patterned legs.
One notable feature of Blepharipodidae is the presence of a pair of prominent, stalked eyes that are located on the dorsal surface of the carapace. These eyes are often large and conspicuous, providing the crabs with excellent vision for navigating their sponge habitat.
Habitat and Ecology
Blepharipod crabs are primarily found in shallow marine environments, typically inhabiting coastal areas with rocky or coral reefs. They exhibit a strong association with sponges, using them for shelter, camouflage, and even feeding. Some species are known to live exclusively within the cavities and chambers of specific sponge species.
The feeding habits of Blepharipodidae vary depending on the species. Some are primarily detritivores, feeding on organic matter and detritus that they find within their sponge hosts. Others are more predatory, capturing small invertebrates that venture near their sponge homes.
Classification
The Blepharipodidae family is currently recognized as comprising 3 genera and approximately 20 species. These include:
- Blepharipoda
- Cryptodromia
- Liomera
