Astralium

Astralium is a genus of medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Turbinidae, the turban snails. This genus is found in the Indo-Pacific region and is characterized by its distinctive spiral shell.

Common Names

Members of the genus Astralium are commonly known as star snails, star shells, or star turbos. This name reflects the star-shaped pattern often present on their shells.

Characteristics

Astralium snails have solid, conical shells that are typically 2 to 5 centimeters in diameter. They are characterized by the following features:

  • Spiral shape: The shell exhibits a distinct spiral pattern with multiple whorls.
  • Star-shaped pattern: Many species display a star-shaped pattern on the shell surface, formed by ridges, bumps, or depressions.
  • Operculum: Like other turban snails, Astralium species possess a thick, calcareous operculum that closes the shell opening when the snail retracts.
  • Coloration: Shell colors vary widely within the genus, ranging from pale beige to deep brown, often with intricate patterns.

Environment

Astralium snails are found in a variety of marine environments, including:

  • Intertidal zones: Some species can tolerate exposure to air during low tide.
  • Shallow water: Many species inhabit rocky shores, coral reefs, and seagrass beds in shallow waters.
  • Subtidal zones: Some species occur at greater depths, up to 100 meters.
