Aseraggodes
Aseraggodes is a genus of tonguefishes belonging to the family Soleidae, commonly known as soles. These flatfishes are found in the Indo-Pacific region, with a range extending from the Red Sea and East Africa to the western Pacific Ocean. They inhabit a variety of marine environments, including sandy bottoms, coral reefs, and seagrass beds.
Characteristics
Members of the genus Aseraggodes are characterized by their flattened bodies, with both eyes located on the right side of the head. They have a relatively elongated body shape, with a pointed snout and a small mouth. Their scales are typically small and cycloid, meaning they are smooth and rounded. These fishes have a distinctive coloration, often featuring a mottled or patterned appearance, which helps them camouflage against the seabed.
Environment
Aseraggodes species are typically demersal, meaning they live on or near the bottom of the seafloor. They are generally found in shallow to moderate depths, ranging from the intertidal zone to around 200 meters. They prefer sandy or muddy substrates and can often be found in association with coral reefs, seagrass beds, or rocky outcrops.
