Argyrotheca

Argyrotheca is a genus of marine gastropods in the family Trochidae, commonly known as top shells. This genus contains a small number of species, mainly distributed in the Indo-Pacific region.

Characteristics

Argyrotheca snails are characterized by their distinctive conical, turban-shaped shells. The shells are typically small to medium in size, ranging from a few millimeters to several centimeters in length. They often exhibit a smooth, polished surface with a pearly luster. The shell aperture is typically circular or oval-shaped and has a well-developed, prominent lip. The operculum, which is a protective plate that covers the opening of the shell, is usually present and can be either calcareous or corneous.

Environment

Argyrotheca species are typically found in shallow, coastal waters, often inhabiting rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass meadows. They are often associated with coral reefs and other marine ecosystems. Some species may also be found in intertidal zones, exposed to both air and water.
