Andresia

Andresia is a genus of sea slugs, specifically nudibranchs, belonging to the family Chromodorididae. These brightly colored mollusks are found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world. Common names for species within this genus include “Chromodorid nudibranchs” and “Blue-ringed nudibranchs.”

Characteristics

Andresia species are characterized by their generally oval shape and bright coloration. They typically have a smooth, fleshy mantle with a prominent, central ridge that runs down the length of their body. Their rhinophores (sensory organs) are lamellate, meaning they have multiple leaf-like projections, and their cerata (gill-like appendages) are often arranged in rows along their sides. The most distinctive feature of Andresia is their striking blue coloration, often adorned with bright yellow or orange markings. This vibrant coloration is thought to serve as a warning to potential predators, signaling that these slugs are toxic or unpalatable.

Environment

Andresia species are found in a variety of marine habitats, including coral reefs, rocky shores, and seagrass beds. They are generally associated with shallow, coastal waters and are often found in areas with high levels of biodiversity. They are carnivores, feeding primarily on sponges.
