Description & Characteristics
The shell of Cantharidus puysegurensis is typically 10-15 millimeters in diameter, but can reach a maximum size of up to 20 millimeters. Its color is highly variable, ranging from pale brown to reddish-brown with darker brown markings. The shell is smooth and glossy, with a distinctive conical shape.
Habitat and Occurrence
Cantharidus puysegurensis is a common inhabitant of rocky intertidal zones and shallow subtidal environments. It is typically found in the infralittoral zone, the area between the low tide mark and the depth where seaweed no longer grows abundantly. This species is particularly prevalent in the southern regions of New Zealand, where it is found along the coastline of the South Island and Stewart Island.
